So, I was stuck in Paris Airport for a few hours waiting for my connecting flight. I took out my laptop in hopes of free internet. Opened up my browser. And there we go. Bad news and good news! The familiar screen pops up asking you to pay for the internet. But wait, at the bottom corner of the screen, it says something like "Free internet browsing for 15 minutes". Woohoo. Atleast I have 15 minutes of entertainment. I entered my name, email address and there we go. So after some emailing, facebooking, twittering and browsing, the time slipped by and in no time the 15 minutes were over.

Now what??

I sat there and thought. Haha! I still have my phone. It was my Samsung Captivate. But you know the small screen and the slow speed of these phones. Makes browsing a terrible experience. Even though these phones are much better than previous ones, the browsing is still a pain.

So NOW what??

I remembered reading somewhere, "15 min browsing per device". Some of my grey matter upstairs put on their thinking caps. So if they say "per device", that means they don't use the email you entered in the beginning as a means to stop you from using the 15 mins more than once. But then how would they find out it was from a different device. The answer is obvious for any one of you who have studied computers. No?? Well the only thing that came to my mind was the MAC address of the device.

I was on my linux OS. I had done it before, changing the mac address, but I couldn't remember the commands. Opened up the terminal. Nope. For some reason I thought maybe staring at the terminal would make me remember. But I had my phone. That much browsing can be done of the phone right??

So a quick google search gave me the needed commands.

You will need to either loign as root or use sudo in front of every command.

> ifconfig wlan0 down
> ifconfig wlan0 hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
> ifconfig wlan0 up
> ifconfig wlan0 | grep HWaddr

You should enter any hex digits instead of the X's above. For example

> ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 4f:ed:18:05:a9:28

I got the commands from here.

I was a bit skeptical. It can't be that easy right?? But it was. It worked and I managed to get another 15 mins of free internet. Then after 15 mins, another change and another, but then it was time for my next flight.

If you are on windows or mac my friend, its not the end of the world. A quick google search will tell you how you can change the mac address of your computer as well.

Happy flying!!

Nice tag line. But looks like there is gonna be no movement around here. The non-commercial agreement you make when you install the Microsoft Kinect SDK does not allow you to use it any business even though you don't make money out of it. Check this link out. things-you-cant-do-with-the-microsoft-kinect-sdk.

So back to the topic on the title. OpenNI and the Kinect SDK. Will they work together, I mean will they work side by side. I guess not, yet. I installed the Microsoft Kinect SDK today and guess what, my OpenNI drivers stopped working, how convenient. Now I can't run the game I made with OpenNI and Unity3D. So I guess I'll just uninstall the official drivers for now, but not before I play around with the SDK it and get to see what it can do.

You'll probably be thinking right now why the hell would I go back to OpenNI drivers when the guys who made the device released there drivers. Guess..
Well I knew you'd guess wrong! No, its not because of the commercial license thingy. Its just cuz its not as compatible. Well it has its advantages which OpenNI doesn't have like very (and I mean very) easy motor control and good audio support(though I didn't try it yet). BUT its doesn't do a thing more that skeletal tracking.

The NITE software from OpenNI gives you much more with gesture recognition and stuff. And plus they have a NITE wrapper for Unity3D. How cool is that!! I managed to make a game within a few days with the Kinect. You must be wondering Microsoft has XNA and there must be someway to get Kinect working with XNA. Well there isn't a way yet. At least not an easy way. Some guy at Microsoft got the SDK running with XNA but supposedly he had to jump through a few hoops to get it up and running. Anybody out there with a solution please post it somewhere.

Well Id say it was easy to program in C sharp with the SDK but until they don't give me support with a good graphics engine, Im hanging around with OpenNI for now.

To try out the SDK just download from here. Download link for the SDKIbrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-61970378338111639672009-06-01T00:48:00.000+05:302009-06-01T00:48:07.050+05:30i Tech Geek: Google Wave - What is this???i Tech Geek: Google Wave - What is this???Ibrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-38763501814503418092009-05-31T20:25:00.010+05:302009-06-01T00:21:25.919+05:30Google Wave - What is this???A new wave in technology and the internet, Google Wave. Im blabbering about email, but what is this new wave about. Well google has an answer to everything. They decided email is too old. We need something new. Something cool.

They came up with Wave, Google Wave.

Google wave in a new communication service that integrates email and instant messaging together. This thing is called a wave. Now I know you are a bit confused. Just look at the video posted above and you'll be clear..

Google Wave has been designed by the founders of Where 2 Tech, Lars and Jens Rasmussen, a start-up acquired by Google to create a cutting-edge mapping service, which later became Google Maps and Stephanie Hannon.

Related Articles

Get Free Wi-Fi In The Airport

Eye-Fi: The Memory Card With Wi-Fi

Honda's Cyborg Legs

How To Completely Format Your NokiaIbrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-85944145515173391152009-05-31T01:43:00.004+05:302009-06-01T00:21:56.893+05:30How To Completely Format Your Nokia Mobile PhoneThis simple method will completely format you Nokia symbian phone as you got it brand new. Everything will be erased- contacts, settings, applications and anything at all that you added after you bought your phone.

It is very simple.

1. First turn off your phone.

2. This can be very tricky. You might wanna ask for some help from someone.
Press and hold the the (*) key, the number (3) on the keypad and the green call button simultaneously and press the power button without leaving the other keys till you see Nokia on the screen. I might have to say this again you have to press all the four buttons i.e. first the 3 keys mentioned above then the power button simultaneoulsy and hold on till you see Nokia on your phone. If it doesnt work try holding for longer.

3. If it asks for the country and time settings, that means your phone is completely formatted.

Congratulations.. :))

You have a brand new phone.

This must work on most of the symbian phones.

If you have ant questions, please leave a comment and i will answer immediately.

Related Articles

Google Wave..What is this??

Get Free Wi-Fi In The Airport

Eye-Fi: The Memory Card With Wi-Fi

Honda's Cyborg LegsIbrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-92022609186991314462009-04-30T21:15:00.007+05:302009-06-01T00:22:44.421+05:30Honda's Robo-Legs Uncovered
The days of crutches and supports have gone. The Japanese automotive giant and a pioneer in humanoid robots, Honda has come up with a new robot technology that helps people with difficulty in walking. Its like a robotic leg, an exoskeleton you may call it but it looks just cool. Its not the stuff of movies anymore but it out here.

Inspired by Honda's advance robot Asimo, Honda has developed the technology from there. It has two products- Stride Management Assist and Bodyweight Support Assist.

The Stride Management Assist is an easily wearable lightweight device that helps people with difficulties in walking but still can walk on their own. It supports body weight to reduce the load on the users legs and also supports movement. It supports the user while walking, climbing stairs and also in a crouched position. It is easy to wear with a simple structure consisting of a chair, shoes and a frame.

These devices are being tested in Honda's assembly lines. The lithium-ion battery is good for two hours of crouching or walking — an interval that matches up nicely with break times.

Related Articles

Google Wave..What is this??

Get Free Wi-Fi In The Airport

Eye-Fi: The Memory Card With Wi-Fi

How To Completely Format Your NokiaIbrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-68725956564646270492009-04-22T20:11:00.009+05:302009-06-01T00:23:03.743+05:30Eye-Fi:The Memory Card with Wi-FiMany of us hate the hassle of transferring photos from the camera to the laptop. First remove the card, put it on your computer, then transfer the photos, then again get it back to your camera. I know how much of a nightmare it is. Thats why I prefer keeping multiple cards.

Now some of us would be wondering if we could magically transfer the photos directly via bluetooth or internet or somehow to the laptop without having to do that much. We realize that it could happen somewhere in the future but not NOW...

Well its time to stop dreaming cuz you are in the future my friend.. Cuz here we have a normal SD card with gigabytes of storage with Wi-Fi integrated into it. Yes you heard me right Wi-Fi.

The Eye-Fi Card is a wireless memory card. By squeezing a Wi-Fi transmitter onto the main chip of a two-gigabyte memory card, Eye-Fi allows a camera to automatically beam photos to a computer or upload them to the Web. It can automatically upload pictures in JPEG format from a camera to photo sharing sites such as Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, PhotoBucket and may support youtube soon. It can also use Wi-Fi to find its location and geotag photos to display on a map.

To know more about Eye-Fi you can go and check it out on its own website at www.eye.fi.

Related Articles

Google Wave..What is this??

Get Free Wi-Fi In The Airport

Honda's Cyborg Legs

How To Completely Format Your NokiaIbrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-55455868600112997612008-10-28T04:56:00.009+05:302008-10-29T01:44:18.924+05:30Google Earth for iPhone Shrinks The Whole World On To Your Finger TipsTechnology has made our world small. But Google and Apple, they made it even smaller. Google has launched a custom multi touch version of Google Earth for Apple's i Phone. Google Earth has been available for the desktop for about three years. This version for the i phone (and i-pod touch) makes it the first ever mobile version.

The application replicates the hard-core experience of the desktop version, but with a touch to it. Its sounds really cool but most of us have no clue what it is. If you're one of them you better read this post.

A microcontroller is basically a small low cost computer on a chip and usually includes:

-A microprocessor (CPU-8/16 bit)
-A small amount of RAM
-Programmable ROM and/or flash memory
-Parallel and/or serial generators
-Timers and signal generators
-Analog to Digital (A/D) and /or Digital to Analog (D/A) Converter.

Now let me take an example of an ATMEGA8 microcontroller which i used for my mini project.

The microprocessor is a part of the microcontroller that does all the processing and calculations. For example: the Intel chip in you computer is a microprocessor. The ATMEGA8 has an 8-bit microprocessor doing all the processing in it.

The ATMEGA8 consists of a 1KB(1024 b) SRAM that is used while executing programs.

A very important part of a microcontroller is its memory. ATMEGA8 has a flash memory of 8KB, which is more that enough for our purpose.

A timer is a very essential part of a microcontroller that keeps track of the time. Its not a simple clock to check time but used as a reference to guide various programs.

A/D and D/A converters as they seem are just used to convert analog signals to digital and digital to analog respectively.

Below is a schematic diagram of a ATMEGA8 microcontroller.
Ibrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-71474421558022869712008-10-27T01:51:00.011+05:302008-10-28T05:30:25.856+05:30My First Step Towards Making A RobotI finished my 12th grade exams, i am preparing myself for university. I am somewhat exited and somewhat scared. I have big dreams. I visualize myself in university working out thrice a week, making robots, improving my swimming and table tennis and doing many more things while excelling in academics simultaneously.

Well finally I join the university. Its called NITK (National Institute Of Technology Karnataka), one of the reputed universities in India. The first week went smoother than expected, I thought my dream was going to be reality. Then the second week passed by. The classes had started normally. Well the days started becoming busier. Assignments and test started pouring in. Well that was the end of my dreams. Already 2 months had passed by, i had barely gone to the gym twice, maybe i swam a couple of times. And the robot, you're kiddin' right. I didn't even have time to think about it. I could see my dreams being nothing more that dreams. But I was still not ready to accept it.

The mid-exams got over and the end-sems were approaching fast. I finally admitted that my dreams will be nothing more than dreams. Then just at that critical moment a ray of hope emerged out of no where. The Robotics Workshop of our University had organised a Robotics workshop. That was it. I could see it coming. They said that only 30 teams from Ist year could participate. And a team must consist of three members. I quickly managed to form a team with two of my friends, Vishwaas and Ameya. Vishwaas had some previous experience in electronics and basic robotics and Ameya had some experience in programming.

We all were enthusiastic and attended the workshop. They told us some basics of micro controllers and its programming. We were also supplied with kit with a bread board, an ATMEGA8 microcontroller and many other components. Our first assignment was to complete a simple IR circuit(without the micro controller) that would light up when we place an object in front of it. Amazingly our team managed to complete it the fastest. We were all shocked with the limitless possibilities we could achieve in this field. In the following sessions we were taught how to program and use a micro controller to make it do what we want. All excited we went back to our hostels and just realised that the End-Sem exams were coming up within a few weeks. Dam!!!. Again i could see my dreams drifting away. Then we decided to start building on the project the next semester.

Studies for our exams had started and we were all busy. One evening when we were relaxing after a long day of studying, my friend Vishwaas asked me, "Hey!! Why don't we just solder the BSD programmer(the device that is used to transfer the program from the computer to the ATMEGA8 microcontroller)". I was like, "Sure". I didn't mind sparing some time from studies. Well then we started. It was about 10.30pm when we started . We finished soldering the bsd programmer at about 11.15. Then Ameya (the other member of our team) said, "Hey!!! I could write a program for the microcontroller". Then we decided to make a simple circuit that could blink two led's alternatively. I started designing the circuit while Ameya did away with the programming.(He finished the program in no time). Me and Vishwaas completed the circuit on the bread board while Ameya did the necessary stuff on his desktop. It was late. About 3.00 in the morning. Well it was toooo late. We were all excited to see the result of our combined effort. We hooked up the circuit to the desktops parrallel port. All was set to burn the program on to the microcontroller. We all took a deep breathe and Ameya clicked on the EXCECUTE button. Well nothing seemed to happen. It was our first time. We didn't know what to expect. Well experience had taught me that electronic circuits rarlely work the first time. We still hoped for the best and attached the micro controller to the completed circuit. It was a very exciting moment. I attached the battery and ......."Dam!!!! Its not working". My prediction had been true.

We didn't lose hope yet. We rechecked the connections, we rechecked the program but in vain.. It was already 3.45 in the morning. We tried to burn the program again having double checked everything. "It must work this time", I said. I connected the battery. "Whow".."Damm!!"...The LED had lit up for a sec but stopped glowing.. Well it was about 4.30 and we are a little bit frustrated.. Something was wrong but 'What was it'.. Well the led blinked every time i touched the controller. Something was loose..The microcontroller was not fitting properly in the bread board.. "That was the problem".

We decided that we'll have a last go. We hooked the circuit in the computer the last time..It was now or never. I held the controller tightly on the circuit hoping that the was the only problem in the circuit and we burned the program again.. All three of us had our fingers crossed. If the LEDs dont blink this time, then all our effort would be a waste. The circuit lying on the table, the battery in my hand. Suspense in our hearts, "Will it work this time". It was about 5.00 in the morning, our eyes heavy and our fingers crossed. I carefully attached one terminal of the battery, took a deep breathe and connected the other terminal......"WHOA"...."ITS WORKING".. The LEDs were blinking alternatively, just as we wanted it to.We hi5'ed each other..It was the moment of truth..All our sleep vanished and our eyes were wide open. We were now in a party mood 5.00 in the morning.. But then the stinging feeling in our brain, we have our exams coming up in a week. Nonetheless we had accomplished something great that night.

My dreams were finally turning into reality.

The Universities Tech fest, ENGINEER is coming soon and i hope we will we ready by then to build a robot with some help of course..

You can see on the right the final working micro controller circuit with the blinking leds.Ibrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-86884465009705407902008-10-21T01:29:00.010+05:302008-10-25T02:57:58.251+05:30The New MacBook Pro is out.Well we have all been waiting for the new revolution in laptops. It has a dedicated video/music and camera button. It has also got WLAN, stereo speakers, mini USB connector and a 3.5 mm mini jack connector. It has internal storage of 160MB and a 64 MB ram. Its connectivity features include Bluetooth 2.o with EDR support, uPnP, UMTS, infrared, GRPS, EDGE and SIP support. If you might be thinking that all this can only accommodate in a bulky, heavy device you are completely wrong. Don't get me wrong, all these features are packed into a compact and relatively small body of 99mm x 20mm x 53mm weighing only 120 grams. It does have some disadvantages. But not to worry these are relatively nothing if compared to its features. It has a very low standby battery life and with a somewhat sluggish performance for a high price of $650. Its innovative two way sliding mechanism could have been more secure and its body feels cheap.

Well thats all for the new Nokia N95.
Ibrahimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00037136703223102478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5287827982048739290.post-80587792244003933372007-08-22T00:05:00.002+05:302008-10-27T03:58:27.075+05:30i Tech Geek Welcome to i Tech Geek.

If you are a technology enthusiast or a gadget freak, you have come to the right place.
